We Are Expecting

We have had a successful Tie. Or what I like to call the "Two Headed Dog". When breeding the male dog releases sperm during what can only be described as the "Happy Feet Dance." Then his bulbus glandis (penis) swells. This makes it impossible for him to come out of the female. They are locked or tied. They can be tied for anywhere between 2 and 30 minutes. During the time that they are tied the male is releasing prostatic fluid. The male will lift his leg over the females back and turn so they are stuck butt to butt.

"The Two Headed Dog" has appeared around here a few times this last week. The first time was on March 26th. Of course I did have to be out of town. Alexis had a Dance Competition in Saint George (which she took first in). I absolutely did not want to have an unsupervised Tie. This is Callie's first time being bred, so I was unsure of how she would react. I needed to make sure that she did not panic and accidently hurt Tux. So I went and picked my mother up from Idaho. That way she could stay at my house for the weekend and supervise. I was told that almost right after I left we had a 17 minute Tie. Callie was a little scared at first and tried to kick Tux with her back legs. I told my Mom that she just needed to get on the floor with the two dogs and keep her calm. This worked wonderful. They both ended up lying down and almost falling asleep. The dogs were separated after that for about 20 hours. That allows for the sperm to build back up. They were not happy about it at all.
That next day went very smoothly. Callie knew better what to expect and although my mother was there to supervise she really was not needed for anything.

After I came home there was a 15 minute tie at approximately 10 in the morning. They were then separated again. Now later in the evening I had to be out of the house. I put Callie in my bedroom with food and water and shut the door. I let Tux have the rest of the house. This is what I came home to.
As upset as I was, I could only be upset with myself. No matter how well behaved they normally are without supervision at the time of heat they will do anything to try to be together. It does not matter if she is wearing a diaper and he has a belly band on. It does not matter if she is in a fenced in area. He will take her clothes off. He will dig under or climb over. They have even been known to make it work through chain link fencing. He will try to dig through carpet and padding and even sub floor to get to her. Her scent and his urges are just too strong. I should have known better and should have had them both in their kennels.

So we have had a total of four Ties in the last week. With that I am planning on Puppies. They should arrive late May or early June. I will post any changes I see in Callie as well as pictures just as soon as they are born.

Hope you enjoy.
